Cat care at our Adoption Centers When we bring cats into the PetSmart shelter, we are required by Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, the state agency that oversees shelter and rescue groups, to quarantine the animal for at least 48 hours prior to bringing it into our Adoption Center. This helps ensure that animals that we adopt out from the Center are healthy. After the 48 hour period, the cats receive an exam by a licensed veterinarian. Each of the cats in the Adoption Center is checked by a licensed veterinarian every 7 days to ensure that the animal is healthy. If a cat should become ill he/she will either be moved to a separate “sick room” or if that is not appropriate (given the nature of the illness) moved into foster care. We clean the shelter and feed the cats in the morning and evening of each day. Typically the cats in the Adoption Center are encouraged to come out of their cages during cleaning times so they get a chance to jump around and play. Volunteers and shelter staff often spend time “socializing” and playing with the cats. Why FARS shelters are located in PetSmarts PetSmart allows FARS to use specially designed space within their store in order to shelter and “show case” our cats. PetSmart donates certain brands of cat food and litter to FARS to use while the cats are inside the store. PetSmart also makes a donation to FARS for each cat that is adopted from the PetSmart store. The Feline Adoption & Rescue Society is responsible for all of the cat care and sheltering tasks for our cats in the PetSmart adoption shelter. FARS also develops and maintains its own adoption policies and fees. All adoptions are conducted by FARS staff and volunteers. |
