Cat Caregiver

The purpose of the Cat Caregiver volunteer role is to make it possible for homeless cats to find loving, permanent homes by ensuring cats are well cared for while at the FARS adoption center(s).

Duties

  • Providing each cat with adequate food, water, and medication (if needed).
  • Cleaning cat cages and shelter areas in accordance with Department of Agricultural Resources regulations and FARS policies.
  • Monitoring cats’ condition and notifying FARS of any health or behavioral concerns.
  • Completing cat care forms/checklists.
  • Socializing cats through attention, regular grooming, and play time.
  • Working courteously and cooperatively with FARS staff and volunteers, PetSmart staff, and the general public.
  • Other duties as assigned.



    Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Affection for animals and concern for their welfare.
  • eliable and responsible.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience working with cats, familiarity with cat behavior, and knowledge of common medical conditions.
  • Ability to properly handle cats, including humanely restraining when necessary.
  • Comfort working with animals of unknown disposition and possible medical or behavioral problems.
  • Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 25 pounds for short distances.
  • Ability to follow procedures and properly complete paperwork.

    Location

    FARS has adoption centers in Cambridge and Framingham, MA. Caregivers may volunteer in one or both locations.

    Training/Preparation

    Each Caregiver will receive an onsite orientation from the Shelter Manager or an experienced volunteer prior to his/her first shift.

    Time Committment

  • FARS requests that caregivers commit to at least one shift per week lasting approximately two hours for at least three months.
  • Mornings shifts may be completed between 6 and 10 a.m.
  • Evening shifts may be completed between 5 and 9 p.m. Mon -Sat and 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday

    Probationary Period

    The probationary period lasts four shifts or one month, whichever comes first. At the end of the probationary period the Caregiver and Shelter Manager will discuss how well this role fits the needs, desires, and skills of the volunteer.

    Policies

  • Caregivers may not remove any animal or FARS property from the Adoption Center without express prior permission from the Shelter Manager or Executive Director
  • Caregivers may not bring an animal to the Adoption Center without express prior permission from the Shelter Manager or Executive Director
  • Caregivers may not fail to appear for an assigned shift without attempting to find a substitute and contacting the shelter Violating any of these prohibitions may lead to termination of Caregiver’s relationship with FARS.

    Process

  • Interested Caregiver provides completed application with references and volunteer release to Shelter Manager.
  • Shelter Manager reviews application, contacts references, and approves applicant.
  • Caregiver joins Yahoo Group
  • Caregiver attends orientation
  • Caregiver completes probationary period
