Adopting a Cat from FARS

The Feline Adoption and Rescue Society (FARS) is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer group committed to rescuing cats from homelessness.

It is our goal to place each cat in the best possible home for his/her needs. We work solely in the best interest of the cats. A decision on placing any cat in a permanent home is at the discretion of FARS.

Please carefully review the adoption process and guidelines listed below.

The process to adopt a cat or kitten from FARS is as follows:

  1. Complete the adoption application.

  2. The foster parent who is caring for the cat of your interest will contact you to arrange for you to meet that cat.

  3. If you wish to adopt the cat, we will check the references provided on your application.

  4. The adoption will be completed if all requirements are met.

  5. The adoption donation is payable by cash or check.

  6. Adopted cats must be brought home in an appropriate carrier.

General Adoption Guidelines

  1. The adopter must be at least 21 years of age.

  2. Permission to have cats must be provided from the landlord or proof of home ownership must be provided.

  3. Pets already living with the adopter must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines.

  4. The adopter should fully understand that having a cat is a long-term commitment and should not be taken lightly.

Cats can live to be 20 years old. The adopter should consider where he/she would be 20 years from now and all the time in-between. Cats are not to be kept for the time it is just convenient. Moving with cats in rental property can be difficult and it is a commitment to find housing that will accept your cat. It is unfair to give up a cat because of a move, new pets or any other reason. Cats are very attached to their families and are heartbroken to be given up. The adopter should also consider that it is very difficult to find a home for an adult or senior cat.

  5. The adopter will agree to follow the following requirements as specified in our adoption contract:
    • An adopted cat cannot be declawed.
    • An adopted cat must be seen at least once per year by a veterinarian and provided with necessary vaccines.
    • An adopted cat will receive medical treatment as needed above and beyond an annual vet visit.
    • An adopted cat's health cannot be guaranteed by FARS.
    • An adopted cat will always be transported in a safe carrier and never loose in the car.
    • An adopted cat will not be kept and/or fed outside.
    • An adopted cat will not be given away, turned over to a shelter or abandoned outside. If an adopted cat must be given up he/she will be returned to FARS.

Kitten Adoption Guidelines

  1. Kittens are available for adoption at 8 weeks of age.

  2. At 8 weeks of age they are spayed/neutered.

  3. Age appropriate vaccines are given.

  4. Kittens must be adopted in a pairs.

  5. The only exception to not adopting kittens in pairs is if you have a young/playful cat that will be an acceptable companion for the kitten.

  6. Kittens are fragile and will only be placed in homes that are suitable.

If there are unique circumstances adoption guidelines or requirements may be amended on a case-by-case basis in the best interest of the cat. Our decisions and recommendations are a result of years of experience rescuing and placing homeless cats.

Thank you for respecting our judgment.
